How the Word Is Passed
a Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America
In 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves living in Confederate states, but it was not until after the end of the Civil War, on June 19, 1865, that the final slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas. Juneteenth commemorates this day and encourages us to consider what freedom really means. This is the time for us to examine the experiences of Black people throughout American history and to determine how we will build a more equal future. "Nobody's free until everybody's free." - Fannie Lou Hamer
